FOOD FOR THOUGHT 02/10/25

Everyone expects the Judicial branch of our government to be the bulwark against unlimited Executive power.

I want to know what flavor of Kool-Aid they are drinking.

The Judiciary has no innate power. It's power is derived from the acquiescence of the people

So what happens if a duly elected POTUS decides to give the Judiciary the middle finger?

Nothing.....unless the people rise up and take their power back.

The power of the Judiciary, and the rule of law, comes only from principled people who are willing to accept the decision of the court.

Even the SCOTUS is not "supreme". It's nothing... if people don't agree to obey it's mandate.

So if a POTUS or any other government entity refuses to acquiesce to the rule of law, the only way to restore democracy, or the rule of law, is by revolution.

We saw it in the 1800s. We saw it, again, as recently as the 1960s. Is that where we are headed once again? Sadly, I think so and have since 2015.

COLOR ME STUPID. THIS IS WHAT I DON'T GET.

President Biden’s debate performance was simply disastrous. But who was watching? ~ 50 million people tuned in. But who were these people?

The Maga crowd couldn’t have cared less. They know, no matter the facts, statistics, realities or scientific evidence, the con artist is their man. He is their Messiah. When he refers to ‘losers and fools’ – comments he directed at our military heroes – the backbone of the Maga crowd doesn’t realize that their Messiah-con-artist-would-be king-thug already thinks of them that way because they really are the suckers and fools.

The hard core Democrats know who they are going to vote for so what’s a admittedly disastrous debate performance going to do to their support for Biden? The reality is that it hasn't changed much for the simple reason that Biden is a decent man of faith and principle who has been an outstanding president, by any measure, and is the only person who’s beaten Trump.

Then there’s the third audience; the disillusioned Republicans & Independents who are the swing voters. And what did they think? To illustrate the point I’m trying to make is that there has been only a two point change in the polls.

Not to state the obvious, but a political campaign has at least two viable combatants. Meanwhile, journalists covering the campaign of 2024, are only following the aging Greyhound rabbit around and around the track without covering the other combatant – meaning the convicted felon, Donald Trump & his hallucinations on the stump when he’s not reading from prompter (and sometimes when he is), framed by his pathological behavior melded to his autocratic wet dream, nor is there any evidence that anyone has even considered a Plan ‘B’ to defeat his ambitions and our demise.

If (and I repeat, IF) there is a Plan ‘B’ we need to hear about it now! Otherwise the greatest failure will not be Joe Biden’s disastrous debate and his failure to step aside, but it will be the mainstream media who are empowered to inform and educate us about our options, and failed to do so again. That's the real 'covfefe'.

ENGLISH SENSIBILITY

“Why do some British people not like Donald Trump?”

A few things spring to mind. Trump lacks certain qualities which the British traditionally esteem. For instance, he has no class, no charm, no coolness, no credibility, no compassion, no wit, no warmth, no wisdom, no subtlety, no sensitivity, no self-awareness, no humility, no honour and no grace – all qualities, funnily enough, with which his predecessor Mr. Obama was generously blessed. So for us, the stark contrast does rather throw Trump’s limitations into embarrassingly sharp relief.

Plus, we like a laugh. And while Trump may be laughable, he has never once said anything wry, witty or even faintly amusing – not once, ever. I don’t say that rhetorically, I mean it quite literally: not once, not ever. And that fact is particularly disturbing to the British sensibility – for us, to lack humour is almost inhuman. But with Trump, it’s a fact. He doesn’t even seem to understand what a joke is – his idea of a joke is a crass comment, an illiterate insult, a casual act of cruelty.

Trump is a troll. And like all trolls, he is never funny and he never laughs; he only crows or jeers. And scarily, he doesn’t just talk in crude, witless insults – he actually thinks in them. His mind is a simple bot-like algorithm of petty prejudices and knee-jerk nastiness.

There is never any under-layer of irony, complexity, nuance or depth. It’s all surface. Some Americans might see this as refreshingly upfront. Well, we don’t. We see it as having no inner world, no soul. And in Britain we traditionally side with David, not Goliath. All our heroes are plucky underdogs: Robin Hood, Dick Whittington, Oliver Twist. Trump is neither plucky, nor an underdog. He is the exact opposite of that. He’s not even a spoiled rich-boy, or a greedy fat-cat. He’s more a fat white slug. A Jabba the Hutt of privilege.

And worse, he is that most unforgivable of all things to the British: a bully. That is, except when he is among bullies; then he suddenly transforms into a snivelling sidekick instead. There are unspoken rules to this stuff – the Queensberry rules of basic decency – and he breaks them all. He punches downwards – which a gentleman should, would, could never do – and every blow he aims is below the belt. He particularly likes to kick the vulnerable or voiceless – and he kicks them when they are down.

So the fact that a significant minority – perhaps a third – of Americans look at what he does, listen to what he says, and then think ‘Yeah, he seems like my kind of guy’ is a matter of some confusion and no little distress to British people, given that:

• Americans are supposed to be nicer than us, and mostly are.

• You don’t need a particularly keen eye for detail to spot a few flaws in the man.

This last point is what especially confuses and dismays British people, and many other people too; his faults seem pretty bloody hard to miss. After all, it’s impossible to read a single tweet, or hear him speak a sentence or two, without staring deep into the abyss. He turns being artless into an art form; he is a Picasso of pettiness; a Shakespeare of shit. His faults are fractal: even his flaws have flaws, and so on ad infinitum. God knows there have always been stupid people in the world, and plenty of nasty people too. But rarely has stupidity been so nasty, or nastiness so stupid. He makes Nixon look trustworthy and George W look smart. In fact, if Frankenstein decided to make a monster assembled entirely from human flaws – he would make a Trump.

And a remorseful Doctor Frankenstein would clutch out big clumpfuls of hair and scream in anguish: ‘My God… what… have… I… created?' If being a twat was a TV show, Trump would be the boxed set.”

Go Donald!

Do you remember, as I do, Ivanka saying about her father: you will not find anyone who will work harder for the American people; that he will never give up. Well, god bless her little heart, she was right. Keep it up, Donald. You're the best at positioning the Democratic party for continued success.

FOLLOWING THE SHINY OBJECT, JOURNALISM IN THE AGE OF TRUMP

What I wouldn't do to sit down with Walter Cronkite, Bud Benjamin, Peter Jennings, Tom Brokaw, Fred Friendly, Roger Mudd, Chet Huntley, David Brinkley, Tim Russert, Mike Wallace, Bob Schieffer, and a few others to discuss how the TV news outlets are covering this political season.

I think it borders on irresponsibility especially as TV journos consider themselves an indispensable column in the democratic coliseum. But it may be time to realize that what was once fine TV news reporting is now slithering from the Fourth Estate into the Fifth Estate.

Journalists and news outlets of all kinds ARE indispensable to a healthy democracy. However, there is much public sentiment that views TV news as utterly dispensable. Considering how much news is consumed over the airwaves, this is dangerous but may be deserved.

Day after day, there is uneven, lazy TV reporting on our presidential candidates, arguably the most important story in the world for all that it suggests about our place amongst nations. I watch the coverage day after day. I find myself talking to my TV set. I'm both disgusted and sad.

It's like watching an extremely accomplished, greatly respected individual, who once had gravitas, now living as a drug addict, on the street, family-less, home-less, fund-less, scrounging around, wondering how to get their next (ratings) fix.

First published in my local newspaper during the 2016-17 campaign season. Three years later I am able to say that journalism (especially newspapers) are again carrying their weight, restoring their mantle & leading the way.

IS MICHAEL BLOOMBERG THE ONE?

It is my opinion that to win the presidency in 2020, Democrats will need a strong MODERATE candidate to run against Donald Trump.

While Joe Biden is the only viable moderate candidate currently on the campaign trail, he has not generated much excitement in the electorate although he does seem to have support in the working classes & black communities. However until now, there has not been a viable REALPOLITIK alternative. I believe that situation changed when Michael Bloomberg entered the 2020 campaign for President of the United States.

Michael Bloomberg is socially liberal & fiscally practical, which is different than being fiscally conservative. As a graduate of Johns Hopkins University & Harvard Business School he, himself, is well educated & believes in a strong public education system for everyone. To that end, he took controversial measures to improve public education for millions of children in New York City during his time as Mayor.

As an extremely competitive, tough skinned New Yorker he will stand up to Donald Trump -- another New Yorker -- on the campaign trail & on the debate stage.

He recognizes and has called Donald Trump a con man & will prove it. Bloomberg can play dirty as necessary but it will be based on facts, not tweets, memes & name calling. He will bring the latest M1 Abrams to the gunfight and will obliterate Donald Trump intellectually at any level, on any issue.

Unlike Donald Trump, Michael Bloomberg is a multi-billionaire who earned his money, does not need and will not take a penny from anyone in any form. He cannot & will not be bought by any lobby & has demonstrated that by improving the lives of millions of New Yorkers as mayor over a period of 12 years. Since then, he has spent millions fighting special interests that have warped social issues affecting our everyday lives.

For 20 years, he was the CEO of a successful & respected business built on facts. It is clear he is a data driven executive who leads on reality, not emotion or politics. In other words, he is not an ideologue. That’s Realpolitik.

As a businessman he believes in tax realignment and has created thousands of jobs beyond the 20,000 employed by his own company while mayor of New York.

He is action oriented, but has proven to be a collaborative, successful leader who does not shy away from argument, is a measured & practical problem solver, is not afraid to apologize & admit error, has taken successful action on the environment, gun violence, student debt & health care. Moreover, he is neither a sociopath nor a psychopath. In other words, he is not nuts.

Bloomberg has said that he would turn the Situation Room into an open space, everyday collaborative work area where he will roll up his sleeves to serve alongside his advisers, appointees &/or cabinet members, to listen to facts & to discuss current issues; all before making decisions. His only use of the Oval Office will be for ceremonial occasions. In my opinion, all this signals a constructive work ethic & a governing style that we desperately need.

You may not agree with my assessments but, in my opinion, Michael Bloomberg is a substantive contender & should be considered for the 46th Presidency of the United States of America beginning January 20th, 2021.

WAG THE DOG

I have no doubt that Donald J Trump picked Suleimani from a list of possible targets for a very simple reason.

It's called getting the biggest bang for your buck.

It is counter programming. And as long as he can keep it going, one way or another, he will succeed in blunting the national conversation about impeachment while honing a jingoistic campaign for another four years.

Only a broad swath of activist groups -- along with fulsome news coverage -- may be able to change the conversation.

Unfortunately, that will most likely include a lot of national unrest. It would be 1968 again.

ON RACE

Over the years, I've thought about this subject but was never able to *understand* it as much as I now do from reading this article. I tried to imagine my own reactions were I *anything* racial & couldn't conceive of how I would handle it.

Some people say they are "color blind" to which I say "bullshit" -- unless they are actually blind. They miss the point entirely. It's not a matter of ignoring the obvious as it is that the obvious doesn't make any difference.

Malcolm X, for whom I had a lot of respect, used to preach that "integration" was a feel-good white middle class word that was meaningless. He offered many real life examples to defend his position. Race, he said, will change only with "mongrelization" (his word) otherwise known as intermarriage.

We are seeing that come true in the United States. The more intermarriage between races, the less race bias there is but a minority don't agree. Who's the minority now? ;-)

One way or another, most of us ARE mutts & we all know how smart & resilient mutts are.

THE GOP VS THE ALT-RIGHT

Ann Coulter thinks Donald Trump made the greatest speech of his campaign last night (08/31/16) in Phoenix, Arizona. The subject was immigration and border control. OK, maybe she'll sell more books.

But, personally, I feel badly for serious GOP players who blew a historic chance to have it all.

Almost any other GOP primary candidate could have taken the former Secretary of State at the ballot box because of her historic proclivity for slipperiness.  It seems to be a Clinton chromosomal defect.

Ms. Clinton, an intelligent student of government policies, probably one of the most prepared people to campaign for the White House, will now have to govern upstream, like her husband and her predecessor. However, unlike them, she will probably only get to serve one term.

Meantime, much of the people's business will take a back seat to continued ideological wrangling and truculence at the Federal level despite Madam  President's best efforts.

So while the Democrats may cheer -- and rightfully so -- the rest of the country will get angrier and angrier while Mr. Trump, Mr. Ailes and Mr. Bannon make millions more running the Trump streaming network.

And the poor GOP -- which has an important and legitimate role in balanced governance -- will try to re-build itself with minorities (soon to be majorities) in order to counterbalance the growing ALT-RIGHT contingent... assuming it's still possible in the foreseeable future.

SERIOUSLY, FOLKS......

Seriously, folks:

Can you imagine Mr. Trump sitting through meeting after meeting in the oval office or situation room, listening to all the principals offer their opinions on some issue?

Do you really think he wants to work 12-14 hours a day, 7 days a week except for a few days of golf while under constant scrutiny?

Do you think he's going to read reams of position papers on various issues around the world day after day; even after his 14 hour day in the Oval ends?

How do you think he's going to react when the SS says, sorry Mr. President, it'll take a week to organize your security for your trip to Atlantic City to speak to the Chamber of Commerce about jobs.

Whether you agree with his random thoughts on governing or not -- just as a personality -- do you think this is a guy who is emotionally / constitutionally suited for the constant meetings & discussions as the chief executive of the united States?

What happens the day he gets bored and just wants to have fun? Will Donald be able to be Donald? I don't think he will be able to be true to himself in the Oval Office. It's a gilded cage.

Not being in total control will frustrate him. Although he might enjoy the perceived power, he will not enjoy the job.

Even if Hillary was the only un-trustworthy alternative, one could at least imagine her wonkishness fitting in better.

And there are alternatives.
